Spot gold fell 0.8% to US$1,856/oz, retreating from a two-week high hit on Thursday. The metal was up 1.4% so far this week.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 179 points, or 0.6%, to 30,997, the S&P 500 lost 12 points, or 0.3%, to 3,841and the Nasdaq Composite added 12 points, or 0.1%, to 13,543.
